AUSTRALIA RACE ADVENTURE 2020

The Little Bastards racing team will be competing in The Dry Lakes Racing Assn of Australia’s Speed week on Lake Gairdner South Australia. The event will come off Monday 23rd of March and end 27th March.

The car leaves by container truck from my farm December 23 for the Aurora Airport. There it will unite with 2 containers containing Marlo Treit’s project 550 streamliner. At this site all 3 boxes will be fumigated and sealed.

Early January the containers will be shipped to a U.S. port and loaded for Adelaide, Australia.

Our crews will meet the racecars in Australia early March. The cars will be prepped at a shop in Adelaide and then shipped by container trucks 200 miles North via 2-laned blacktop, then gravel and then dirt to the edge of the giant salt lake. The crews will stay in a converted sheep-shearing shed and or tents in the racers camp. Both facilities are crude but have running water, showers and toilets. The area – desert – could be very hot and crawling with strange animals of the Australian outback.

Food water and cold beer will be available at the lakeside. And the camaraderie of Aussies who are known to be friendly, fun, funny, and damn good beer drinkers.

Our car, a blown Ardun-headed flathead powered lakester will run on a record of about 220 mph. This mark should be very achievable providing we don’t have a catastrophic mechanical failure of some kind. We’ve packed every conceivable extra part that can bolt to the car and motor. We will not be taking an extra motor. (Scroll left-right to view her closeup nose-to-tail.)

And now for the really good news. I’m here accepting the Bonneville 200 MPH hat from Dan Warner, BNI senior certification consultant. I made the 2-club and have stepped into the sophisticated world where a small group of men and women from around the world wear “The Hat.” I’m very humbled by the honor, believe me. To qualify I had to set a record over 215 mph, a bar set by the BNI for my class: XXFBFRMR, which in my case is a replica of a 1923 Ford roadster powered by a supercharged 50 Mercury engine with souped up Arden ohv heads. We qualified on the first run at 220.8 mph - the most unbelievable ride I’ve ever experienced in my life. At 180 things begin to chance trying to push all that wind and keep the car going as straight as you can with your foot planted hard on the gas. From there to 220 you're just throwing yourself through the mile posts that jet by faster and faster. Then the end and the parachute comes out and pulls into your shoulders like you're suddenly pulling a plow. You coast for a mile and turn out, pull the fuel shut off and kill the magneto and roll in silence looking for the return road hidden in a scene straight out of the movie Dr. Zhivago; white as far as you can see. My crew met me with a lot of jubilation. It was their success too. The car was locked in impound waiting for the next morning early for return run and a shot at the record. I fell asleep knowing I would have to make another wild ride the next day. There are so many things that can go wrong. Just the slightest mechanical failure or driver’s error can do it. Next day I made a run of 215.81. Whew! Just enough to establish the record of 218.327 mph. Life is good.

Back on the salt in September for the Utah Salt Flat Association meet. The track was rough and rutted during speed week so we came back for an attempt to raise the record to over 200 mph with the help of my crew: Jerry Stauffer, center, Al Rossback right with screw driver and Bob Lick left, white shirt and with the added wisdom from Ernie on the right and the two-hatted wizard Don Ferguson on the left. Also we had help from Marty Strode, not pictured, who built most of the car.

Friday October 3 I was in this sound booth at a music studio in L.A.  T. J. Troy, a man with a voice, has done the reading for my new audio version of The Little Bastards. The studio thought it would be nice if I would come down and read the preface in person. After 3 attempts I passed. I was sitting in front of a mike once used by Bob Dylan. It's a powerful feeling to whisper into a microphone and have the sound come roaring out the other end. I got the hell out of there and came back to Oregon before I got to liking it too much. A good neighborhood for selling and signing books for sure. We were successful, sending people home with books in their pockets all over the USA and several countries. We met so many cool people which made the whole affair more than worth it. Next, It's off to Medford, Oregon for the Southern Oregon Rod and Custom show, the weekend of the 8th and 9th of February. Ron Austin, a Medford native who helped me restore Bob Duedall's Comp/coupe, will be in the booth also.

My book is designed, it has 288 pages of grip. I've had a hell of a time with the back cover which is just a small description of the story. It is about all you have besides the front to pitch the thing to a roaming shopper. I've got a little case of writer's guilt or something going on that's kind of normal after you finally conquer the beast. After many attempts I turned it over to my daughter, Caralee, who wrote it without a blink, in time to get it included in the design.

The book is gone. I sent it away to Illinois for the designing of the interior. It is the first time in two years I haven't had a book to be writing. This author business is roller coaster like. The top is pretty damn cool but it can take the wind out of you. As soon as the book is formatted with the style of font, size and so forth it's going to the publisher. I hope to have a few before Christmas, but it will be a stretch.

I'm wishing everyone a happy Thanksgiving. Stay warm.

The book is now in the hands of my editor, Addie Maguire, who is correcting small errors that were uncovered by five proofreaders who pored over the work during the week ending November 15. Thanks to all who were not let down by their quest. They found more than I would have ever dreamed.
20 November 2013 · Author: Jim Lindsay
One of the proofreaders was Ms. Sue Cammack of Albany who is a sought-after sleuth not only in proofreading but in uncovering the intent of the author. When the book was returned to me, a little note was inside that she left for me. This is what she said, and I quote: "I related to your book in many ways, picturing the times, the people and the places. You have captured the essence of those times and the people in the 60's." She also wrote, "I sense the true joy you've experienced in recalling the pals, predicaments, and places of your youth. I feel privileged to have had an opportunity to travel back with you, picturing your trip of memories. Your writing made the adventure delightful!"

The book is a novel without a bit of truth to it except that it happened during my youth in a small town situated in the Northwest just like mine. Sue is right in the fact that I based the story on my experiences of the way I was raised and the people and places around me. I just couldn't help it. However, I must remind you that it is all fictional and none of the characters are real.
